The impetus for forming Merwulf began in late 2022 when veteran songwriter Merri Garcia, inspired by listening to bands like The Chats and Illuminati Hotties, decided to trade in her signature melodic piano & synth medium and instead take up bass guitar. The goal was to find an edgier, less pristine sound for her songs that better reflected the realities of being an educator and mother in a post-Trump, post-COVID, post-climate-tipping-point world. In Jan 2023 she teamed up with long-time collaborators Misty and Larry Reynolds to form Merwulf.

Eschewing electric guitars for a simple bass, keys, and drums set up, Merwulf aims to say as much as possible with as little as possible. The resulting sound is at once familiar and difficult to pin down, with comparisons that span all the way from The Minutemen to Waxahachie. Their debut single, 'All Zen', was recorded in their home studio and released independently on August 4th, 2023, alongside bonus songs 'SAD Snake' and 'Hurt Deep'.
